JUNIORS
Portpatrick has one of the fastest growing junior sections in Scotland.
During May, Portpatrick Golf Club allows juniors to “come and try” at no cost. Beginners may play the Dinvin (9-hole course) while juniors with a handicap of 24 or lower may play the Dunskey Course.
One of the most progressive moves of our recent history has been the introduction of the “Blue Course”. This is a properly measured course within the Dunskey course that gives juniors a feel of the “big” course without its exhausting length. Because it is a measured course, it can be used for handicapping purposes.
During the beginner’s early days, some emphasis is given to rules, etiquette and safety.
Girls may also play in Ladies competitions when they reach the required level. For a junior to obtain a handicap, he/she must submit three cards signed by an adult or a junior who already possesses a handicap.
Juniors will receive coaching from professional James Erskine. At least one of his assistants will be of Level 1 standard. This coaching will be free whenever possible.
There will be various groups and sizes involved, depending on playing ability.
A junior who demonstrates potential and a willingness to learn is likely to be selected for further coaching.
